<description>How Does Typographic Design Use Three-dimensional Space to Enhance its Audience’s Experience?

2010

Abstract

This paper seeks to explore how typographic design uses three-dimensional space to enhance its audiences’ experience. Typography is a fundamental tool of communication, and something that has a strong influence in our daily lives. Although typography was conventionally designed to be two-dimensional, designers are now experimenting with new mediums such as incorporating typography within three-dimensional space. Three-dimensional space can be ‘virtual’ or ‘physical’, and when used in conjunction with typographic design can stimulate audiences’ sensory modes, causing effect. Theorists like Schubert et al (2001) and Lombard and Ditton (1997) identify that for an effect to be caused, a design must provide a sense of realism, involvement and spatial presence. Additionally Eisner (2002) points out that aesthetic design is more likely to create an effect upon an audience than an anaesthetic design.

Four case studies have been critiqued; Peemoeller’s typographic design for the Eureka Tower Car Park, Channel 4’s advertising idents, Byrom’s letterform kites, and I Amsterdams typographic installation; three of which use three-dimensional physical space. For each case study critiqued the above theorists were applied, and the effects the individual designs have upon their audience are explored and discussed.

It was concluded that for an effect upon an audience to be experienced two of Schubert et al (2001) factors of presence, involvement and realness, needed to be apparent within the design. It was also obvious that designs displayed in their natural environment, and those that appeared aesthetically, caused heightened experiences for their audience. Although theorists argue otherwise, it is questionable whether virtual and physical three-dimensional space provide the same level of effect upon its audience, or whether one is more influential; consequently this was identified as an area of potential further research.

<description>Social media artwork for Zee&#38;Eli. Producing music under ZiiZii records, Zee&#38;Eli are shaping up to make a significant mark with their blend of house meets nu-disco, indie dance and big bass lines.

With a sound that’s always evolving and with a keen ear for fun dance floor shenanigans, the duo’s early releases have come courtesy of labels such as Flumo, Ponton, Hype Muzik, it_Tizz and ZiiZii Records. Their tracks draw influence from a varied range of producers such as Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex, Lee Foss, Solomun, Claude VonStroke, Crazy P and Tim Green. Indeed Tim Green has been an early high-profile supporter of their work playing tracks at a string of gigs.
