I chose a social space to observe and record where people sat in comparison to each other, which naturally created patterns of personal space. From this human observation, and a number of smaller surveys carried out in public spaces, which aimed to capture different visual interpretations of personal space, I determined a shape, and a set of rules, which allowed me to design a grid system that can now be implemented by (my target audience) architects and space planners as a method in which personal space can be measured. Outcome: Understanding the concept of territorial distances and their existence should increase architects and space planners capacity to design buildings and spaces with more consideration of individuals needs of personal space.
